Reflections

By Sandy Grossman-Morris, Founder of Seams To Help

Seams To Help shows how a group of volunteers can make a huge difference in their community.

When the coronavirus pandemic hit, my years as a Red Cross volunteer in mass sheltering and organization, plus actively volunteering with various church, 4-H, schools, etc, and 30 years employment in healthcare, enabled me to see a need and act on it.

I began “Seams To Help” on March 23, 2020, thinking that perhaps 7 or 8 kind hearted Brentwood neighbors would be interested in helping to make masks for their medical community on the front lines of the Coronavirus battle.  Ultimately, we organized a phenomenal system of grassroots volunteers that have produced over 11,000 beautifully crafted masks!

Everything is made using donated materials and are free to recipients. Please go to the Mask Makers Page for more information.

Currently, Volunteers each do a separate task in their own Home Cottage Industry assembly-line-style before proceeding to the next step/home. That way they can efficiently complete masks (and now other projects!) in great numbers–safely–without face to face contact. It’s an organized & supportive, multiple-team, house to house, non-contact assembly line churning out as many masks (and other items) as they can every week.

We’re also working on Pillowcases for Troops deployed overseas (627 in 2020!) and for Children who’ve lost their homes in recent fires. We are now adding more Compassion Projects, such as: NICU burp cloths, blankets for veterans, baby dolls for dementia patients, Angel Baby burial clothes and Scrappy Pet Rescue Beds (recycling our scraps!) and Fidget Mazes for local students finding assimilating back into the classroom a bit overwhelming.  We are always raising funds for supplies to create these projects.

This amazing team of Volunteers are doing what volunteers do best, giving tirelessly of themselves for the betterment of their community and beyond.

As the conditions of the Pandemic change, we find that we may shortly be able to meet monthly to work as a group to make projects, We will still work on projects in our homes but getting together will help us to actually meet each other, as most of us have never met due to the pandemic!

We are now a 501(c)(3)!  And, as you can see, we have a website to spread the word of our incredible organization, which will enable us to accept donations to keep our sewing machines humming along, creating needed items for our community and beyond. Please help, if you can, by volunteering and/or donating.

Interested in our ongoing projects? Sign up for our Online Quarterly Newsletter. There may be occasional emails sent out in case of an urgent need, and we will always follow up with an update in the next Newsletter.

Thank you for hanging in here...to the beginning of the rest of this story!
